The importance of negotiation training

Negotiation training helps people learn how to effectively negotiate with others. By practicing with simulated negotiation scenarios, people can learn how to better understand the other party's perspective, resolve issues, identify potential areas of agreement, and reach mutually beneficial outcomes. Negotiation training can also help people learn how to manage difficult conversations and navigate through conflicts.

Now you might tend to think: "Negotiating? I can do that anyway!"

Or: „I do it every day (for 20 years)!"

Unfortunately, we have to disappoint you here. It is a myth that good negotiators are born with the skill or that life experience is a good teacher for effective negotiation. We share with you three reasons why professional negotiation training is the best way to analyze and boost your negotiation performance.

1. Feedback

How often do you ask your counterpart, after a real-life negotiation, how much was really her maximum or minimum? What else would she have been willing to trade, and which of her interests are satisfied by the outcome? How often do you even get any feedback at all in your negotiations?

Without feedback, your potential for improvement is severely limited. This is why negotiation training is so important: You get the opportunity to receive constructive feedback on your negotiation style and strategy. This way, you learn what works and what doesn't, and ultimately, which behavior matches with your sense of authenticity. Feedback is key to developing successful negotiation strategies. It will help you calibrate your own behavior in the future and become a more effective negotiator.

2. Practice

People commonly fail to reach their desired outcome, or even any outcome at all, because they misunderstand the process and don’t realize that they are in a negotiation. That is because they often lack the routine to deal with the situation. Negotiation is not a skill that you are born with; it’s a skill that requires clear and concise communication, a respectful tone, calm and controlled action, a positive attitude, and active listening. Some people have a talent for maybe one or the other; however, those who really master any of these skills have acquired them over years, if not decades, through consistent practice. For true mastery, you need to focus on consistent practice. Negotiation training provides you with a place to practice.

3. Protected environment

Trying things out and receiving feedback on them is the most valuable way to improve one’s negotiation performance. But you have to try things out in order to know what works!

Negotiation training provides the perfect playground for that: In simulated negotiation settings, you can experiment with different styles and strategies in a safe environment without any real-world consequences. Everyone is in the same boat with you, and making mistakes and wildly practicing different negotiation techniques is expected in training sessions. Other people will do the same with you, and it will create a safe and constructive learning environment. You have nothing to lose or be ashamed of by trying things out.
